Cuckoo Stone near Matlock is thought to have originated from cock crow stone, it is said to turn around at dawn on certain days of the year at the cock’s crow and is reputed to rotate to midnight.
The Cuckoo Stone stands on the 11th fairway at Matlock golf club by the side of a hawthorn tree, about 20yds from the footpath that cuts across the fairway.
The stone could be in its natural position of have been purposely erected. Its name has been repeated locally in a dale, a lane, a farm, a wood and a quarry which are all named after it

At Looe, the Cock-crow Stone was said to turn around three times whenever it heard a cock crowing. National Trust Cragside in Northumberland also is home to one.
